19. The Blue Racer
Pelee Island is home to this big, beautiful snake that can only be found there. The color of its back can range from grey to metallic green to metallic blue.
With a length of up to 1.5 m, the Blue Racer is one of Ontario’s largest snakes! Pelee island’s range of this species is quite large, possibly due to habitat fragmentation that forces it to travel far and wide in search of food and shelter.
Aside from habitat loss due to development, the Blue Racer is threatened by wildlife-human conflict, with humans killing the snakes both accidentally and deliberately.

Blue racer snakes are non-venomous subspecies of Eastern racer snakes. There are still a few blue racers that exceed two metres in length, but in general, they are long, slender, greyish-blue snakes.
White-golden face masks cover their white ventrals. It is also possible to mistake this snake for another type of snake. Many species mimic rattlesnakes by rattling their tails in the leaves when threatened.
