10. Checkered Belly Snake
Snakes like this one are thin and long, with a wide head and bulging brown eyes. Checkered orange, black, and yellow make up the pattern.
When fully grown, the checker-bellied snake can reach 125cm in length. From Panama to Trinidad, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, it can be found in habitats ranging from forests to marshes.
In nature, they are nocturnal animals. Unless the conditions are right, they are rarely seen during the day. Their main food source is believed to be lizards.
Trinidad’s checker-bellied snakes are among the rarest snake species. There is not much data recorded about its behavior.
There have been very few sightings of the snake in Nariva swamp where it has been found foraging by itself. Juvenile snakes move in loops and throw themselves forward in a similar manner to sidewinders.
A snake’s large head would be hidden beneath its coiled body when it comes into contact with a predator due to its non-aggressive nature
