Indian Army Day Celebration Significance
In 2022, India celebrates Army Day on January 15 with tremendous zeal. Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa (K. M. Cariappa), who headed the Indian Army, was commemorated.
Each year, the day is commemorated by mounting a military parade and several other martial displays at Delhi Cantonment’s Cariappa Parade Ground.

History And Significance
The British Indian Army was founded within the British administration on April 1, 1895, and was known as the British Indian Army. It wasn’t until January 15, 1949, that India received its first Indian chief after becoming independent in 1947.
In 1949, Lt Gen KM Cariappa succeeded General Francis Butcher as commander-in-chief of the Indian armed forces.
Indian history begins with the transfer of authority from Britain to India. This event is celebrated as Army Day.
As well as marking this day, it is also a day of remembrance for those who have died protecting the country.
Who Was Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa?
Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa, was born on December 25, 1899, in Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka.
He belongs to an illustrious Kodava family that has had many army commanders. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant of the Indian Army on December 1, 1919.
He volunteered to serve overseas during World War II and later took over as the commander-in-chief of the Indian army in 1949. The same year, he retired from his role when India became a republic.
Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956, and after his death in 1993, he was cremated with full military honors at the Madikeri (Mercara) Cantonment Cemetery in Kodagu District.
Cariappa’s mother tongue is Kodava Takk and he belongs to the Kodava community.
His wife’s name is Muthu Kauvery and he had two sons, Ranjit Cariappa and Gopalakrishna Cariappa, who both became generals in the Indian Army.
The cremation ceremony was attended by the three military service chiefs, along with Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.

The Indian Army plays an important role during crises since it is determined to become a war-winning team.
