Mahatma Gandhi is one of the many great men India has produced in the past. The whole world has admired him for devoting his life to the teaching of love, non-violence, and truth.
He loved the entire humanity and sacrificed himself for communal unity. He was a saintly man who believed in the aspects of simple living and high thinking.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, whom people lovingly called ‘Bapu’, is popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi.
He was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar in Gujarat. He received his early education at home and was highly influenced by his parents. He was sent to England for higher studies.
He studied law and, in 1891, was called to the Bar. He returned to India and set up his legal practice but could not succeed as a lawyer.
Two years later he went to South Africa for a legal case. He guided the Indians there to struggle against injustice and tyranny, which they were suffering under harsh laws. It was a successful non-violent movement.
After 21 years, he returned to India and joined the struggle for India’s independence. Sabarmati was the Centre of his many activities of non-violent, non-co-operation movements.
For this, he was sent to jail many times. He fearlessly fought against injustice and tyranny, which was rampant everywhere.
He firmly believed in Satyagraha, a fight based on truth against injustice, cruelty, and untruth. He successfully led his fellow citizens to their freedom in August 1947.
Mahatma Gandhi was a great humanitarian. He was a God-fearing and spiritual-minded person.
The father of the nation not only served the country but worked throughout his life to uplift the weaker sections of the society and remove many social and moral evils.
According to him, God and truth are the two sides of the same point and serving humanity is serving God.
Mahatma Gandhi was a great patriotic man of India, and he possessed a great personality.
The British left India due to his pressure on 15 August 1947. He was a notable public figure.
His role in social and political reform was great. He aimed to get independence not from fighting but from non-violence (Ahimsa).
The two leaders influenced by Mahatma Gandhi are Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela.
He ruled the hearts of the people of India with a feeling of love and brotherhood. However, after India’s independence, the country was divided into two parts – India and Pakistan. He was disheatened about this.
His father’s name was Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi, and his mother was Putlibai.
In 1874, Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi went to Rajkot to serve as an adviser to Maharaja in Rajkot.
In 1876, he was appointed Diwan of Rajkot. The initial Gandhiji training took place in Porbandar.
Mahatma Gandhi was an average student who was very innocent and shy. He won an award also.
Once, he started eating meat quietly so that no one could know that he was eating meat, as in his house, no one was allowed to eat meat.
He was inspired to tell his father the truth that he was eating meat was by the show of ‘Satyavadi Raja Harish Chandra’.
Mahatma Gandhi married Kasturbai Makhanji Kapadia at the age of 13. They had four sons, Harilal (1888), Manilal (1892), Ramdas (1897) and Devdas (1900).
Gandhi Ji graduated from college in Ahmedabad in November 1887 and enrolled in college at Samaldas College Bhavnagar.
Mahatma Gandhi suffered from pleurisy during the First World War when he was in London.
The condition, an inflammation of the lung lining, caused him some anxiety.
Still, he knew the cure for it was not in medicines but in dietetic changes and external remedies. In 1918, The Spanish Flu disease came around the world.
It decreased India’s population by 1.7 Crores (17 Million estimated) by killing them. It didn’t even spare Mahatma Gandhi.
Mahatma Gandhi also suffered from the Spanish Flu, but the doctors tried and cured him.
In 1942, he led the famous Quit India Movement. The slogan ‘Britishers leave India’ echoed from every nook and corner of the country.
He was thrown behind bars. Gandhiji was the moving spirit behind the Congress organization and the freedom movement.
It was under his guidance that the country became free. In 1947, India became free after centuries of slavery.
The people heaved a sigh of relief, but the country was divided into two Dominions — Indian Union and Pakistan.
He lived a splendid life and has set great moral standards before us. He showed the world the true way to peace.
He wished to see India prosper, but he became a martyr for the noble cause of Hindu Muslim unity at the time of partition when a religious fanatic, Nathuram Godse, shot him dead on January 30, 1948.
His last words were ‘Hey Ram’. He lived and died for his country and countrymen.
