It was initiated by the Socialist Party in the United States in 1909 and was celebrated in New York. Still, it wasn’t until Clara Zetkin, a German feminist, launched to be a holiday in 1910 that it took off across Europe.
8th March International Women’s Day has been recognized since the 1900s, originating from a time of political unrest and starting when 15,000 women marching through New York demanded voting and workers rights.
By 2014, it was observed in more than 100 countries and made an official holiday in more than 25 countries. The day indicates a call to action for hastening women’s equality.
