Myth 1: Snakes Are Poisonous

Technically, most snakes aren’t poisonous, but this may be more of a semantic issue than a biological one. They are venomous, in fact!

There is a slight difference between poisonous things and nonpoisonous things in that poisonous things can make you sick whether you ingest, smell, or inject them.

By contrast, venomous creatures actively inject their toxins into you through bites or stings. A snake that produces venom in its bite is considered venomous, not poisonous.

There are, however, a few exceptions to this rule as with most things in the animal world. Despite being non-venomous, garter snakes have toxins in their bodies that can harm us if we eat them. What a surprise!
