    When To Isolate

    You should isolate yourself from family or others when you have COVID-19, regardless of your vaccination status.

    Additionally, isolate yourself if you suspect you have COVID-19 but have not yet been tested.

    Upon receiving a positive result, you should follow the isolation recommendations listed below. You can end your isolation if your results are negative.

    IF YOU SHOULD TEST Negative: You can end your isolation

    IF YOU SHOULD TEST Positive: Isolate yourself completely as outlined below

    The number of days of isolation for COVID-19 is as follows:

    If you had no symptoms

    • Day 0 marks the day you were tested (not when you received a positive test result)
    • Day 1 follows your test day and is your first full day of rest

    If you happen to develop symptoms within 10 days of testing, day 0 is reset on the day the symptoms begin.

    If you had symptoms

    • Day 0 of isolation is considered as the day of onset of symptoms, regardless of when you tested positive for the illness
    • Day 1 is considered as the first full day after your symptoms started.

    1. The best course of action, if you test positive for COVID-19, s to isolate yourself from others at home for at least five days.
    2. The first 5 days of your illness are likely to be the most infectious.
    3. Wear a quality mask when you have to interact with others at home and in public.
    4. Do not go anywhere without wearing a mask.
    5. Do not travel.
    6. Avoid interaction with others as much as possible by staying at home.
    7. It is advisable to use a separate bathroom if you can.
    8. Make sure your home is ventilated as much as possible.
    9. Cups, towels, and utensils are personal household items that shouldn’t be shared.
    10. Make sure you monitor your symptoms. Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience an emergency warning sign (like trouble breathing).

    If You Have COVID-19, Learn What To Do

    • Stay home and separate from others.
    • Improve ventilation (airflow) at home to prevent COVID-19 from spreading to others.
    • Monitor symptoms and follow healthcare provider instructions
    • Rest, drink fluids, and use over-the-counter fever medicines.
    • Store your medicines correctly and within quick reach.
    • Practice everyday hygiene and cleaning, and avoid sharing personal household items.
    • Wash your hands often.
    • Coughs and sneezes should be covered.
    • Make sure you wear a mask or respirator that fits well, provides protection, and is comfortable to wear around others.

    When caring for a person with COVID-19, here’s what you need to know:

    • Preventive actions should be followed every day
    • Keep your distance from them by wearing a high-quality mask.

      Ending Isolation

      Isolation should be ended based on the severity of your COVID-19 symptoms. It is not necessary to postpone the end of isolation because of the loss of taste and smell that may persist for weeks or months after recovery.

      If you had no symptoms after the fifth day, you may be able to end your isolation.

      If you had symptoms and they have abated after day 5, you can end isolation if you are clear/fever-free for 24 hours/1 day (without the use of fever-reducing medication)

      If your symptoms persist then you must continue to isolate till you are clear/fever-free for 24 hours/1 day (without the use of fever-reducing medication) or till your symptoms are improving.

      In case you experienced symptoms and moderate illness (like experiencing shortness of breath or having difficulty breathing) you ought to isolate through day 10.

      If you have a Severe illness/you were hospitalized or have a weak immune system

      1. You ought to isolate through day 10.
      2. Consult your physician before ending isolation.
      3. Ending isolation period without a viral test may not be a viable alternative for you.

      To determine whether your symptoms are moderate or severe, or if your immune system is weakened, consult your healthcare provider.

      Until At Least Day 11, Regardless Of When You End Isolation:

      • You should avoid being around people who are more prone to get very sick from COVID-19.
      • Whenever you are indoors, whether at home or in public, remember to wear a high-quality mask.
      • Until you are able to stop wearing masks, don’t go anywhere where you can’t wear one.

      As soon as you have ended isolation (no fever without using fever-reducing medications and symptoms improving),

      • The mask should be worn through the 10th day.

      OR

      • The use of antigen tests is recommended if you are able to obtain them. If you have two consecutive negative tests 48 hours apart, you may be able to remove your mask sooner than day 10.

      Note:

      1. Positive antigen test results may still indicate that you are infectious. 
      2. Continue wearing a mask for 48 hours before taking another test. 
      3. Until you get two consecutive negative results, continue to take antigen tests at least 48 hours apart. 
      4. If this is the case, you may have to wear the mask and test beyond day 10.

      Once You’ve Ended Your Isolation

      In case your COVID-19 symptoms recur or worsen, restart your isolation at day 0. If you have querries or doubts about your symptoms or when to end isolation, contact your healthcare provider.

      SARS-CoV-2 infection is not excluded by negative test results, and negative test results are not a sufficient basis for treatment or patient management decisions, including infection control decisions, as noted in the Food and Drug Administration labeling for authorized over-the-counter antigen tests.
