Snakes are often misunderstood as aggressive because defensive behaviors are misinterpreted.
However, snakes don’t attack without provocation. It is more likely that snakes chase people when they are trying to get to a retreat site behind the observer.
There are several postural warnings snakes give when threatened, including neck flaring, lifting their heads off the ground, and opening their mouths.
