About The Ramayana
The Ramayana is an ancient Indian epic that recounts the exile and eventual return of Lord Rama, the prince of Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh, India), sometime in the fifth century BCE.
It was composed by the sage Valmiki and taught to Rama’s sons, the twins’ Lava and Kush, by him.
It is a lengthy poem, approximately 24000 verses in length, and is known as the Adi Kavya (adi = original, first; kavya = poem) by tradition.
The plot is intertwined with philosophy, ethics, and notes on duty while the foundation narrative concerns palace politics and fights with demon tribes.
In contrast to the Mahabharata, which depicts its characters with their human foibles and shortcomings, the Ramayana focuses more on an ideal world.
Rama is a model son and king, Sita an example of a good wife, Hanuman a perfect devotee, Lakshman and Bharat excellent brothers, and even Ravana’.
Regional Variations
The Ramayana was written in Sanskrit. Many vernacular versions emerged over the years as retellings of the tale, adding local flavor, and providing clarifications and justifications for those confrontations that showed Rama in a less-than-heroic light.
The Ramavataram, a Tamil poem written by Kamban in the 12th century CE, is well-known in southern India.
Tulsidas composed the Ram Charit Manas in the Awadhi dialect, which is popular throughout northern India.
Many versions exist in Telugu, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, and other Indian languages.
