    Durga Puja 2022

    One of the grandest festivals in India is Durga Puja, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm and grandeur in almost all states.

    In addition to West Bengal, Durga Puja is also celebrated in Odisha, Tripura, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

    As it celebrates the victory of goddess Durga over Mahishasura, the buffalo demon, it is another festival that depicts good triumphing over evil.

    This festival, Durga Puja is celebrated by Assamese and Bengalis for six days. It consists of Mahalaya, Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Nabami, and Vijayadashami.

    In order to welcome Maa Durga after her battle with Mahishasura, the Buffalo demon, it’s time to prepare for this 6 day long Durga Puja 2022.

    Durga Puja Dates 2022

    Navaratri’s last day is celebrated as Durga Puja. The festival commences on Shasthi and culminates on Dashami when Maa Durga’s idol is immersed in rivers or other water bodies to mark her return.

    This year, the Durga Puja festival 2022 will be held from 1st to 5th October.

    Mahalaya 2022 will be celebrated on the 14th of October 2022. This is also one of the significant dates of Durga Puja when people invite Goddess Durga on the Earth, and eyes are drawn on her idol.

    Shasthi – 1st of October 2022

    On Shasthi, people believe that Goddess Durga descended to earth with her four children.

    These include Ganesha, Kartikeya, Lakshmi and Saraswati. To celebrate, many idols of Maa Dura are opened for the public to view.

    Saptami – 2nd of October 2022

    The ritual of Pran Pratisthan is said to have invoked Goddess Durga idol with life on Saptami.

    A Banana tree is made to get dressed in a sari and bathed in a river like a newly wedded bride, and the process is called “Kola Bou”, where kola means banana and bou means bride. This is used to transfer the energy of Goddess Durga.

    Ashtami– 3rd of October 2022

    Goddess Durga is worshiped as a young virgin girl during the Kumari Puja ceremony on Ashtami.

    Sandhi Puja is an evening ceremony in which we worship Chamunda, the Goddess Durga who killed the buffalo demon Mahisasur.

    The Yearly Puja on this day, Victory of Good over Evil, generally takes place at the time when the killing of Mahisasur took place.

    Navami – 4th of October 2022

    On the final day of the festival, a Maha Aarati is held to mark the conclusion of the event.

    Everyone dons new clothing and enjoys himself or herself to the maximum in the celebration.

    Vijaya Dashami – 5th October 2022

    On Dashami or Vijaya Dashami, people believe that Maa Durga returns to her husband’s abode, so they move the idols for immersion in the river.

    Once the process is complete, everyone enjoys a delicious meal and sweets.
