World Poetry Month: Day Twenty Four
Today’s poetry is ‘If You Forget Me’ a poem by Pablo Neruda. The subject of “If you forget me” is unclear, but Neruda emphasizes the importance of reciprocity in his romance.
Analysts say the poet is referring to Chile – as the poem was written during Neruda’s exile during the Pinochet coup – but he could also be referring to his lover and third wife, Matilde Urrutia.
Possibly Neruda is commenting on both the emotional intensity and insecurities of love.
As a result of his Chilean roots and his relationship with Urrutia, his identity was profoundly influenced. Never will Neruda’s words be forgotten, one thing is for sure.
‘If You Forget Me’ By Pablo Neruda ▶️
“I want you to know
one thing. You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little. If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.”
Prompts
let me look at your smile

Smile
In the darkness of this
No moon night…
Nothing seems in life
So right…
Except your innocent smile.
In the harshness of this
Snowy freight…
Nothing works to crush
this cold night…
Except your innocent smile.
In this phase of painful
Ride…
No one can pull and stop
This stride…
Except your innocent smile.
In this world of false and
Pride
Nothing seems truthful and
Full of light…
Except your innocent smile.
Let me see this world
With you by my side..
Forever with your innocent
SMILE.
